How do these cat calculators work?

The feeding tools use the resting energy requirement, 70 × (weight in kg)0.75, the same starting formula vets use. It’s multiplied by a factor for your cat’s life stage: about 1.2 for a neutered adult, 1.4 for an intact adult, 1.0 for a cat that gains weight easily and 2.5 for a kitten. The cat food calculator then turns those calories into cans of wet food and cups or grams of dry, for any wet-to-dry split you choose.

The cat age calculator follows the chart used in feline life stage guidelines: a 1-year-old cat is about 15 in human years, a 2-year-old about 24, and each year after that adds about 4. It also tells you your cat’s life stage and how often vets suggest checkups.

What should cat owners know before using them?

Indoor, neutered cats often need fewer calories than food labels suggest, and it’s easy to overfeed dry food because it’s so dense: a whole day’s portion for a 10 lb cat can be well under a cup. A kitchen scale helps.

Cats also need to lose weight slowly. A cat that stops eating for even a few days, especially an overweight cat, can become seriously ill. If your cat needs to slim down, or has a health condition, ask your vet before changing food amounts.
