How Much Should a Kitten Eat? Calorie Chart by Weight

Quick answer
A kitten needs about 2.5 times its resting energy each day: roughly 165 kcal at 2 lb, 275 kcal at 4 lb and 370 kcal at 6 lb. Split it into 3 meals a day until 6 months, then 2 meals until 1 year, per Cornell. Keep kittens on kitten food until about 12 months.
How much should a kitten eat? More than you might expect for its size. A growing kitten needs about 2.5 times its resting energy, compared with about 1.2 times for a neutered adult cat, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. In practice that means a 4 lb kitten eats about as many calories as an 11 lb neutered adult cat.
Below is a feeding chart by weight, how many meals to give at each age, and a worked example with our cat food calculator.
How many calories does a kitten need?
Vets estimate a kitten’s daily calories in two steps. First, resting energy (RER) = 70 × body weight in kg^0.75. Then multiply by 2.5 for a growing kitten. That is the formula our cat calorie calculator uses for kittens.
Kitten feeding chart by weight
| Kitten weight | Calories a day | Wet food (90 kcal cans) | Dry food (400 kcal/cup) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb (0.45 kg) | 97 kcal | 1.1 cans | ¼ cup |
| 2 lb (0.91 kg) | 163 kcal | 1.8 cans | a heaping ⅓ cup |
| 3 lb (1.36 kg) | 220 kcal | 2.4 cans | ½ cup |
| 4 lb (1.81 kg) | 274 kcal | 3.0 cans | ⅔ cup |
| 5 lb (2.27 kg) | 323 kcal | 3.6 cans | a heaping ¾ cup |
| 6 lb (2.72 kg) | 371 kcal | 4.1 cans | 1 cup |
| 7 lb (3.18 kg) | 416 kcal | 4.6 cans | 1 cup |
| 8 lb (3.63 kg) | 460 kcal | 5.1 cans | 1⅛ cups |
2.5 × RER (Merck). Cans assume a 3 oz can at 90 kcal and dry food at 400 kcal per cup, our calculator’s defaults. Use the numbers on your own food’s label: kitten foods range widely.
Two notes on reading the chart:
- Most kittens eat a mix. If you feed half wet and half dry, halve both columns. A 4 lb kitten on a 50/50 plan gets about 1½ cans and ⅓ cup of dry food.
- The factor is a starting point. Growth slows after about 6 months and most cats are near adult size by 10–12 months (VCA), so older, bigger kittens often need less than the top rows suggest. Let body shape guide you: a kitten should look lean with a visible waist.
How many times a day should a kitten eat?
Kittens have small stomachs and high energy needs, so they need several meals.
| Age | Meals a day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8 weeks to 3 months | 3–4 small meals | Just weaned; VCA notes weaning at about 8 weeks |
| 3 to 6 months | 3 meals | Cornell: three meals a day until 6 months |
| 6 to 12 months | 2 meals | Cornell: two meals a day from 6 months to a year |
| Over 12 months | 1–2 meals (adult) | Switch to adult food at about a year (AAHA) |
VCA recommends portion feeding: measured meals at set times rather than leaving food out all day. Measured meals tell you straight away if your kitten goes off its food, which matters in a small animal.
Worked example: a 4 lb kitten on wet and dry food
Say your kitten is 4 months old and weighs 4 lb. You feed half wet and half dry. In the cat food calculator, enter 4 lb, choose “Kitten (under 1 year)”, set 50% wet, 90 kcal per can, 400 kcal per cup and 3,800 kcal per kg of dry food.
The calculator returns:
- Daily calories: about 274 kcal (range about 247–301)
- Wet food: 137 kcal, about 1½ cans a day
- Dry food: 137 kcal, about ⅓ cup, or about 36 g
- Meals: 3–4
At 4 months, Cornell’s guidance is three meals, so you might give half a can at each meal and split the dry food across the day. Re-weigh every 1–2 weeks and re-run the numbers: at this age a kitten can gain half a pound or more in a fortnight.
How much should a kitten weigh?
There is no single target weight; it depends on breed, sex and age. Most cats reach adult size at 10 to 12 months, and adult weights at ideal condition range from about 6 to 13 lb depending on breed and sex. What should kittens eat?
Choose a food labeled as complete and balanced for growth or all life stages. AAFCO explains that these label claims mean the food meets the nutrient levels a growing animal needs; a food for “adult maintenance” does not. Kitten food is more energy-dense, so portions in cups look small. That’s expected.
Treats should stay small, no more than about 10% of daily calories. For a 4 lb kitten that is about 27 kcal.
When to call your vet
Kittens can go downhill quickly. Call your vet promptly if your kitten:
- skips more than one meal, or eats much less than usual
- has diarrhea or vomiting for more than a day, or any blood in either
- isn’t gaining weight week to week, or loses weight
- seems lethargic, cold or weak
- has a swollen belly with thin limbs (worms are common in young kittens)
A kitten under about 3 months that stops eating for even a day needs to be seen the same day. For adult cats, our post on how many calories a cat needs picks up where this one ends.
Frequently asked questions
How many times a day should a kitten eat?
Cornell Feline Health Center suggests three meals a day until 6 months old, then two meals a day from 6 months to a year. Very young kittens just weaned do well with 3 to 4 small meals.
Should I free-feed my kitten?
VCA recommends portion feeding (measured meals) rather than leaving food out all day. It lets you see how much your kitten actually eats and makes it easier to prevent weight gain, especially after neutering.
How much wet food should a kitten eat?
It depends on weight and the food’s calories. A 4 lb kitten needs about 274 kcal a day. With a wet food at 90 kcal per 3 oz can, that is about 3 cans a day if it eats only wet food. Check your label: kitten foods vary a lot.
When should a kitten switch to adult cat food?
At around 12 months old. The 2021 AAHA nutrition guidelines put the end of the growth phase for cats at about a year. Make the change gradually over about a week.
Is my kitten eating too much?
Kittens should look lean, with a visible waist and ribs you can feel easily. If your kitten looks round, especially after neutering, ask your vet and trim portions by about 10%.
